To celebrate the Institution of Civil Engineers President, Professor Tim Broyd's visit to Guernsey CIGPE hosted an interactive schools event so students would be able to combine their classroom skills to a real world engineering situation. Professor Broyd's specialism is in Digital Innovation in the Built Environment, so the event, aimed at year 10 school students was an activity workshop for the students using BIM - Building Information Modelling.
The students were split into mixed groups and given an iPad per group with a 3D digital model of a building on it. The groups were required to look the model, navigate their way round it, work out how to take measurements from the computer model and build a scale replica of one floor out of cardboard, artstraws, etc.
At then end of the session each floor was pieced together to see how well the students interpreted the building model. This was followed by a talk on Digital Innovation in the built Environment from Professor Broyd.
Local industry expert - CREATE Architecture kindly provided industry mentors for each group as well as virtual reality building models for students "have a go" at navigating.
The aim of the session was to promote built environment careers and for the students to make the link between the individual subjects they study and real life careers and problems. They needed to use Science, Technology, Maths, IT and Creative skills and teamwork to solve the problems and create their models.
